Citizen- 11/4 @ The Crowbar

Tucked away in a side part of Ybor sits The Crowbar. With a dimly lit bar, an outdoor smoking social area, and hundreds of old band stickers and posters across the walls, it’s a perfect spot for hosting Citizen. I’ve never been one to know every single word to their songs, but I have always believed they have one of the most impressive live sets.

Before their set, I watched the other bands while chatting off and on with people I knew at the venue. But things quickly changed for me when Citizen took the stage. Their sound immediately drew me in and everyone around me became but a blur. Their sound is hypnotizing, and I found myself curling up and seeking shelter in it for an hour and a half. Their current tour is celebrating their new album, As You Please, and I was honored to be part of the welcoming crowd.

A highlight of the show was the collective screaming of lyrics to their older single, “The Night I Drove Alone”. I could feel the overwhelming heartbeat of the room as they played this song, and it sent chills up my back. My voice almost gave out with how loud I was yelling the lyrics. It’s incredible when a band can make you feel so strongly for a second, perhaps about a moment in time you yourself have never even experienced. The whole set was a cathartic experience.

All I can say is, please go see Citizen if you ever have the chance. You don’t have to know the words. You don’t have to know the members of the band. Just go and let yourself slip into the experience.
